A professional musician of organ and voice, Harris has the organizational skills and interests that keep Watson’s schemes from landing him in jail. His only condition for leaving it all behind was, “as long as we move to a northern state.” Harris is a Wisconsinite by birth who, brought to Texas by his father’s employment pursuits, never quite acclimated to the South.
Alexander is primarily the deckhand. He is better able to shinny down docks and throw lines. He swabs the decks and shines the brass. He is also the painter, plumber, and carpenter. His upbringing in the world of fine furniture and interior design gives him intrisic understanding of fine joinery and finishing. Writing came much later
Doris Faye was a rescue from the SPCA for the specific purpose of guarding the tools and materials in the back of Watson’s work truck. She was the morale officer on board and good-will ambassador on land, being the first to introduce herself in any port. Doris Faye died in 2009, shortly after arrival in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Found on a cold February night in 2001sinking in her slip at Lake Texoma, the impounded Red River on the Texas/Oklahoma border. No one could have foreseen the adventure that she held in store.
Pramela’s main function was to ferry Doris Faye on necessary shore excursions, but Watson and his dog soon found much more to get involved in that simply going ashore. They saved a school of large-mouth bass marooned by receding floodwaters, hauled trash out of Betty Jane, and fetched guests from dry land. .
