Alexander Watson, the Author
Alexander is primarily the deckhand. He is the younger, the nimbler, and the better able to shinny down docks and throw lines. He swabs the decks, polishes the glass, and shines the brass. He is also the painter, plumber, and carpenter. From his upbringing in the world of fine furniture and interior design, he intrisically understands fine joinery and finishing. Writing came much later.
Dale Harris, the Captain
More than the Captain, Dale is the chief mechanic, electrician, purser and navigator. Trained as a professional musician and being the son of an electrical engineer, Dale pays attention to detail and method where Alexander does not. He is the ballast to Alexander's sails, stability in the face of drive. The two have been a concerted team for thirty-two years.
Doris Faye, the Dog
Doris Faye is the morale office and the goodwill ambassador. She is the distraction from ever-elusive solutions to problems. The first to introduce herself and, by extension us, to any stranger. She is as integral to the trip as the boat and the river.
